Calgary Herald article on Bernard Onsare and Nyial Majock winning the 2008 Mother's Day Run

The finish line of the Sport Chek Mother's Day Run and Walk had become Deere's office for the past 11 years. When it came time for the winner of the men's 10-kilometre race to break the tape, it had been Deere's privilege every year dating back to 1997.

But on an ideal Sunday morning for running, someone finally caught him - two men, actually.
And while Bernard Onsare and his Calgary Track and Field Athletic Association training partner Nyial Majock were celebrating their one-two finish Sunday morning in the annual fundraiser for the Calgary Health Trust neo-natal intensive care unit and special care nurseries, Deere was adjusting to life as a third-place finisher in a race he's traditionally dominated.

Cheetahs - Spring Session will begin May 5th

The Caltaf Cheetahs Spring Session will begin May 5th at Foothills Track in the NW by MacMahon Stadium. No preregistration is required.

Practices will be Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:45 for 8 weeks.

$14,000 grant for new equipment for the Calgary track and field community

Caltaf would like to thank the Amateur Sport Committee of the Parks Foundation Calgary for a $14,000 grant which, along with an additional donation from Caltaf, will be used to purchase equipment for the track community of Calgary. Equipment we hope to purchase include new steeple chase barriers and starting blocks for Foothills as well as roller squeegees for removal of water from the track, throwing equipment, and high jump and pole vault cross bars.

Jack Simpson Meet Results

What a great meet the JD Group had yesterday – sixteen PBs and nineteen top 3 finishes. Congratulations to all of the athletes who participated in the Jack Simpson Open – Alex Smith, Ryan, Sam Babcock, Bryce, Hunter, John, Philippe, Rhykel, Sean, Thomas, Kryton, Hannah, Lindsay, Clio, Ellen, Emily, Kelly, Lexi, Adrianne, Claire, Kelly Ann, Nicola, Allison, Avery, Jasmine and Lisa.

Ryan once again led the way, winning both the 15-year-old men’s 60m and 400m, the latter in an impressive 55.85s. Allison finished 1st in the 13-year-old girls’ 60m with a PB (personal best) of 8.80, an excellent time for a bantam. John won the 14-year-old men’s 1000m with a time of 3:11.25, and finished 4th in the 400m. Sam had a busy but very successful meet, finishing 2nd in the 15-year-old men’s 60m, 2nd in the 400m and 2nd in the 1000m. Clio demonstrated yet again how much stronger she is becoming by running PBs in both of her events, finishing 2nd in the 15-year-old women’s 60m and 2nd in the 400m. Clio also finished 4th in her first attempt at the 1000m. Bryce ran a PB in the 14-year-old men’s 60m to finish 2nd and was 2nd in his first 1000m. Bryce also finished 5th in the 400m. In her very first meet, Avery placed 2nd in the 60m, finishing in 8.96s, an excellent PB for a bantam. In the 14-year-old women’s 1000m, Adrianne again demonstrated her strength in the distance races, taking 12 seconds off her PB to finish 2nd with a time of 3:19.46s. Adrianne also finished 4th in the 400m and 7th of 17 athletes in the 60m. Ellen ran PBs in each of her events, and finished 3rd in the 14-year-old women’s 1000m and 4th in the 400m. Philippe also ran PBs in both of his events, finishing 3rd in the 14-year-old men’s 400m and 5th in the 60m. Kryton, one of JD’s newest and youngest athletes was 3rd in the 13-year-old boys’ 60m and 4th in the 400m. Nicola was 3rd in the 14-year-old women’s 60m, Alex was 3rd in the 15-year-old men’s 60m, while Jasmine, participating in her first meet, was 3rd in the 13-year-old girls’ 400m. Other top 5 finishes included: Kelly, participating in her first meet, was 5th in the 15-year-old women’s 60m, while Sean finished 5th in the 14-year-old men’s 1000m. Lexi ran a PB in the 15-year-old women’s 60m to finish 6th. In his first meet, Rhykel finished 6th in the 14-year-old men’s 60m and 7th in the 400m. Hannah showed how much stronger she is becoming by running PBs in both of her events, taking more than 8 seconds off her PB in the 400m. Claire and Lisa both ran PBs in their 60m races. Emily equaled her PB in the 60m, while Lindsay, in her first meet, set some tough PBs for her to better at future meets.

Our relay teams also ran well. Our 14/15-year-old women’s 4 x 200m team of Nicola (94), Avery (95), Claire (94) and Allison (95) finished in 3rd place, just 1/10th of a second behind the Calgary Warriors. This despite the fact that Avery and Allison were running up against older athletes. Allison ran an amazing final leg in a valiant effort to catch her Warriors opponent at the finish line. Our second women’s team of Lexi (93), Emily (93), Jasmine (95) and Kelly (93) finished in 4th place. Lisa demonstrated that she doesn’t intimidate easily, agreeing to run on the CALTAF men’s team against older athletes. Her 14/15-year-old men’s 4 x 200m team of Thomas (94), Lisa (95), Rhykel (94) and Kryton (95) finished 2nd behind the team from Dino Youth.

After the first three meets of the Calgary Indoor Track Series, the JD Group has several athletes sitting in contention for Series medals: Bryce (gold), Sam Babcock (gold), Adrianne (silver), Clio (silver), Ryan (bronze), Allison (bronze), Philippe (4th), Alex Smith (4th) and Ellen (5th).
