Programs
The speed/power program is a year-round program meant to improve the speed and power of an athlete in the different areas of track and field. This program is optimal for athletes interested in training for sprints, jumps, throws or combined events. Although this program is athlete dependent, an athlete training in this program can generally expect to meet for practice three times a week and weight lift two times a week. At the beginning of the season the speed/power program concentrates on a base program building the athlete's general fitness and strength. The program then moves into a more specific stage, which deals more with the athlete's speed development and technical style for his/her particular event. As the year moves on and competition dates become denser the program shifts into a competition stage at the end of which the athlete peaks for their individually most important competition of the year. Athletes in the speed/power program can expect to compete in indoor
and outdoor track and field meets around western Canada, eastern
Canada or beyond depending on the level and needs of the individual
athlete. The middle/long distance program is a year-round program meant to improve the athletic abilities of an athlete. This program is athlete dependent and ideal for athletes interested in running events from 400m - 10000m. The group meets four times a week, however athletes are expected to do additional activities on their own including but not limited to running, swimming, water running, lifting weights etc. The program is centred on a summer competition season from late April until early August. The main competitions range from the local provincial championships, to regional competitions in Kelowna and Vancouver to our National Championships and are dependent on the abilities of each athlete. There is a short break from training after the summer which resumes as individual running until the middle part of September where a number of the athletes actively pursue cross-country running. This season culminates for many with the Alberta provincial cross-country championships; however, there are athletes that continue to the National Championships in late November. We then take a significant break and then resume training in time to partake in a few of the indoor competitions held in and around Alberta. Athletes in the middle distance program can expect to compete in indoor and outdoor track and field meets around western Canada, eastern Canada or beyond depending on the level and needs of the individual athlete.
The junior development program is a year-round program set up to
introduce athletes to all events of track and field as well as some
of the different types of training they may encounter throughout
their careers in the sport. Specialization does not occur at this
level. Athletes will train in long distances, short distances, intervals,
and hurdles. Athletes will also have the opportunity to try a variety
of field events including throws (shot put, javelin, discus) and
jumps (high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault). There are
many competition opportunities for these athletes throughout the
year including cross-country, indoor track meets and outdoor track
meets around western Canada. This program offers something for everyone. The focus of the Cheetahs program is to introduce young athletes (ages 8-12)
to the sport of track and field while at the same time developing
fundamentals for the sport and a general foundational level of fitness
that will benefit these young athletes in all aspects of their lives.
Each practice athletes will spend time building fitness and strength
for their running events and practicing technique for their field
events. Towards the beginning of a season emphasis will be more
on the fitness and conditioning aspect of track and as competitions
draw nearer an emphases on technique. There are many different approaches
taken to each practice with very little repetition, keeping young
athletes interested. The Cheetahs program is separated into three distinct sessions:
The Cheetah group meets twice a week usually either at the University, the Foothills Athletic Park, or the Glenmore Athletic Park depending on the time of year.
